MARTIN: One of the themes in this movie is that everyone is lost. Everyone's getting along. Everyone's doing their own thing. And then the gun goes off, the bullet goes through the man, the police officer, and hits Chris in the head. And that's when the movie really starts to get interesting.
And it took about five minutes for me to stop myself from saying it. So I wanted to see that line, that racial line in the black community in America. And that's one of the things that I really feel like this movie does a good job of showing.
OK, so we're back. And the first thing that strikes you is that this is not a particularly realistic movie. It's almost like a documentary. And when the police officer says, you're my brother, you're my brother, the police officer says, and then he starts to cry. He's like, I'm sorry, man. I'm sorry.
So it begins with a few local musicians who are playing in a dingy studio. And the manager tells them that they need to change their music a bit. And he says, we need a little bit of the Chi. So they're playing this R&B song, which is really upbeat. And from this point on, the movie is about how people in the black community are living with everyday life. And the music changes.
So this is Chris (ph), the lead character in the movie. He's a chef at a fancy restaurant. And he has a girlfriend, who I think is played by the actress Regina Hall, and she has a baby with her. And Chris and his girlfriend are coming out of a subway station and they're met by two brothers who are both police officers. And they say, excuse me. Excuse me. And they're like, yeah, what's up, officer? And he says, excuse me. And they're like, what's up, brother? And the next thing you know, they're in a gunfight.
KING: Yes. It takes place at a party hosted by Tiffany Haddish. She is a woman of color, and Tiffany is a woman of color in America. But on the South Side of Chicago, you have one of the most segregated cities in the country where people of color are only four percent of the population.
