After a story-driven Prologue showing the various Earnest Ellison's the player is introduced to him in Cook Park, an abandoned and derelict amusement park on the outskirts of a small American town. His name is Earnest, and he is a retired race car driver who is now a full-time drunkard and alcoholic, as shown in flashback moments. He was famous for winning the first race he ever participated in, an impromptu street race in which he t-boned a record executive back when he was a NASCAR driver. He lost touch with his young crew after his big win. As stated by the NFS2 pre-order bonus DVD, he now watches his old friends drive away from the wreckage left behind by the accident he caused, leaving him behind. He has nowhere to go and he can no longer save himself. Earnest ends up in town because he supposedly likes the scenery. He runs into several of his old friends, and encounters a number of fellow alcoholics, gamblers and hookers. Each of the Earnest's old friends offers him a car to race, and they all race each other.
