At a press conference on September 9, 2013, Nickelodeon announced they had ordered a fourth season of The Legend of Korra.[4] Nickelodeon then announced on January 14, 2014 that the fourth season would be titled Book Four: Spirit.[5] The season premiered on April 12, 2014, and ended on May 28, 2014, and consisted of 13 episodes. On July 25, 2014, Nickelodeon announced that the fourth season would be shortened to 10 episodes. Episodes 1 to 10 were made available online a week before the official premiere, while the last five episodes were made available for download two weeks before the season premiere. The season was broadcast in the United States from April 12, 2014 to May 28, 2014, on Nickelodeon. The season was distributed in Canada by Teletoon in the fall of 2014 and in the United Kingdom by CBBC.[6]
The season's title was inspired by a Chinese proverb, which is translated as The spirit returns to the emptiness. If you want to return to the emptiness, follow the spirit. It was chosen because, as co-creator and showrunner Bryan Konietzko explains, it corresponds to the theme of Book Four, which deals with spirituality. He also notes that the phrase is the motto of the Asian martial art of aikido, which Korra practices in the series.
