"The Hollowed-out Voice"

"The Hollowed-out Voice" is the fourth of six poetry and essay collections by Richard Chatham (b. 1967). It is an important book, and deserves to be among the best of the Chatham series.

I have read and taught Richard Chatham's poetry and essays, and I find them to be stimulating and important. This book is no exception. Chatham's main theme is the emptiness of mass society, the decay of the middle class, the degradation of the working class, and the devastation of the environment. Chatham is a clear-sighted thinker, and his prose is intense, incisive, and challenging. His poetry is remarkable for its anger and rage.

Chatham's poetry is characterized by the beautiful simplicity of its forms. The poems are colloquial in tone, and a poem of average length has seven stanzas, containing eight lines each. The rhyme scheme is ABABCC, with the last word of the first line of the last stanza repeating the first word of the first line of the first stanza. This is not a verse form that is well suited for poetry with a greater thematic and philosophical content. However, the simplicity of the form is a perfect fit for Chatham's poetry.
